zero tolerance

Talking about . . . zero tolerancezero_tolerance.jpg

Zero Tolerance is a policy that has been used by schools (and other organizations - police, businesses, the military, etc.) to eradicate unwanted behavior. Zero-tolerance policies establish a pre-set consequence or punishment which is intended to be a deterrent from making an infraction. In thinking about our school systems, is this policy working? In this conversation, we’ll ask you to share stories about your experience with zero-tolerance policies and explore the impact on individual lives and communities.

free speech on campus

Talking about . . . free speech, hate speech and campus life

free_speech__education_2.jpg

When are limitations on free speech justified in America? With the advance of technology, it is easy to connect with our friends, blast our thoughts and feelings to our followers and practice free speech. In this era of being connected all the time, we long to feel safe, while at the same time we are exposed via social media. How can we best protect free speech . . . and our kids? How do we distinguish between disagreement, bullying and hate speech? Are there areas of common ground to be found? This conversation may provide a sense of balance for both older and younger adults.

Talking about . . . resilient schools, resilient kids

resilient_schools_2.jpg

Much of the media coverage about our schools today talks about America’s failing education system and how the United States has fallen in global rankings on education. Resilience is our ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficult situations. What are the right questions to be asking our educators and administrators that will improve resiliency in our schools? And subsequently in our children? In this conversation, we explore the qualities of resilience, the impact of schools on our communities and how we can improve.

student debt

Talking about . . . student debt

student_debt.jpg

College students leave school with more debt today than any previous generation. With the increasing costs of both public and private colleges and universities, loans have become increasingly common as a way to finance education. Average loan debt has increased by 25 percent between 2008 and 2014. Given these difficulties and the availability of more and more online education, people have begun questioning the value of a traditional college education. Recent attempts to provide free tuition for qualified students have left many questioning the resulting costs to taxpayers. So what is the right balance? What might be done?
